Family Adventures operate deep in the spectacular backcountry behind Queenstown, New Zealand. Our route follows the old Skippers road down “Long Gully” joining up with the Shotover river and up towards the deserted settlement of Skippers Township.
Gold was discovered in the Shotover River in 1862 and went on to become known as “the richest river in the world!” Hear the stories of fortune and hardship from this historic period as we travel the Skippers road (a feat of 1860’s engineering) and see the relics of the gold rush from the Shotover river itself. You’ll find it hard to imagine over 2000 people living and working in such an isolated and harsh environment.
